Daniel A. Sutherland papers, 1907-1932.

The Daniel A. Sutherland Papers consist primarily of correspondence and newspaper clippings dealing with political problems and popular issues in Alaska in the 1910s through 1931 and documenting Sutherland's political career. The collection also includes the texts of various speeches by Sutherland, lists of Alaska-related legislative bills passed by Congress while Sutherland was a delegate, a small number of legal papers concerning Sutherland's political difficulties and financial interests, and a group of photographs. Also found in the collection are papers concerning Yukon riverboat captain John S. Worth, for whose estate Sutherland was executor.

Daniel Alexander Sutherland (1869-1955), son of John and Mary (Gwinn) Sutherland, was born in Pleasant Bay, Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. In 1876 the family moved to Essex, Massachusetts, where Daniel attended public schools. On finishing his schooling, he worked in grocery stores and the fish business in Boston and Salem until lured to Alaska by the gold rushes of the late 1890s.
